Remarks

• Foxmarks has saved me on many occassions. I have this installed on a home PC and Mac and on my work PC.

• Foxmarks really is very fine. I can see others have already expressed a desire for source code plus a mechanism for 2 bookmark "sets". Filtering on folders seems like a great deal of work. However, being able to dynamically switch between accounts might be a much more straight forward thing to accomplish. This would also give Foxmarks, either thru the extension or thru foxmarks.com, an avenue for bookmark merging. Like others, I really like your work. Many thanks.

I did not know this was going to somehow link work bookmarks with home bookmarks. When I deleted the home bookmarks from work it has now deleted my home bookmarks. How do I get my home bookmarks back?

However, it's got some really nice things it could do with some tweaking.... 1) Save Foxfire program preferences too.

 a. Permit different preferences for different machines
 b. Permit different Bookmark (subsets) on different machines.
 c. skins?

2) Version for Thunderbird?

 a. Email settings
 b. address books 

(again permit (subsets) for different machines)

Basically, anything which is synchronized should be tagable with a code determining which machine(s) use it. Default would be "all" for which machines.

Posted on 8th Feb.'07 from France: This is a great little add-on for FF (i'm on 2.0)& I just updated to the 0.88 version hoping it would have fixed the ONE problem I have with this extension: the bookmarks on-line are never in alphabetical order tho I just realized that when I clic on my Bookmarks Icon in the navigation bar it's exactly the same (very weird considering that when I 'manage' the bookmarks I put them in A-Z order)But when I open them in my AIO sidebar they are (thank goodness)in A-Z order! Can you confirm whether this is a problem w/FF or Foxmarks. I also use a great on-line program for a couple years now called PLPage; very nice & you can import/export your bookmarks & has a button you can use in IE links bar (tho I very rarely use IE of course) Anyway, thank you

• Very handy, I use it to sync between laptop (thinkpad) and desktop (mac), but what about Internet Explorer? Especially for locked-down environments, a few Javascript 'link' buttons and a popup window should sort that out.

• I would love it if you could get Foxmarks to be compatible with SeaMonkey or create a slightly downgraded version of it, if needed for it to be compatible. I love this extention and use it with 3 different computers and now I have just started to use SeaMonkey occassionally (its nice to have the web browser with email and newsgroups and IRC chat all in one that also support Mozilla plugins, extensions and themes) for when I want to use other larger programs at the same time that I want to check a few random things on a website and keep an eye on my mail and not use up too much of my computer's resources doing so (I want them for the other progams/games). That's it. I love the ability to create a new bookmark on one computer, have it auto sync to the server, have my laptop in the other room be turned on and auto sync with it's "new" update and I can then just wander into the other room, decide I want to go to that new website and have it be there already, just waiting for me, in my bookmarks list. Though I also agree, that a program to sync Extensions and Themes would rule too... - Ivy Vine 11/11/06.

I have a great idea..! Why dont we and more options to Foxmakrs such as the ability to edit your "online" Foxmarks page to add delete or format the links. Also more options in the FF Foxmarks interface such as the ability to check or not check certain folders to add etc. Sleepless

• Hi. Ubuntu Linux 6.10 (edgy) with Firefox 2.0 and Foxmarks 0.84 throws a "DNS Unknown host", even when the address given is an IP. I've tried "sync.foxcloud.com", "sync.foxmarks.com", and "69.80.213.133", all of these give the DNS error. I've also tried using FTP, HTTP, and HTTPS, all fail. Downloads and Uploads both fail. The last sync successfully occured in late October. I have a similar setup on a OSX machine which works fine with identical settings. I loaded up wireshark and discovered that Foxmarks was trying to resolve the hostname defined for the computer in /etc/hosts, even though the hostname doesn't actually go anywhere real.

That doesn't make much sense to us. I'd recommend having a look in your foxmarks.log file (or sending it to us) to understand what's going on. --Todd 17:28, 10 November 2006 (EST)

• It would be great if it was possible to keep local 'bookmarks panel folder' untouched during update. I use FF at different places, home, work etc and the work's quick links on the toolbar very differ from these ones at home (corporate sites VS mail, news & games sites). It would be enough to have a checkbox "update bookmark panel folder" in the settings. How do you like this ? Storing sites' icons would be usefull also. • Setup Wizard can't handle non-US ASCII chars. - Hi there. I tried two times to register before i gave up to use my real name that includes some German umlaut. In HTML the representation of this characters is ü ö ä and so on. You can find some information on this topic here After registering the synchronisation is working, but logging into the website always gives me an HTTP 500 error. • I stopped using F.M. for a while because initially it would kill my RSS feeds. I'm an RSS hound! I use it to stay up on my favorite news subjects but I digress. I stumbled across it again the other day on one of my 3 pc's when upgrading to FF2.0 and gave it a try. To my surprise it kept my rss's alive! THANK YOU! This is FANTASTIC NEWS! Thank you so much for the hard work you put in on this extension. Let me make this promise. I will happily contribute to the cause when I am able. • A great extension, I just started using it and have found it really useful. Since I use Firefox both at home and at work, being able to have full access to my bookmarks (which are up-to-date) is very helpful. I have a suggestion, but it may have been suggested before, as it seems like an obvious direction for the evolution of this utility. I now have firefox installed on a USB Flash drive (by changing the setting in the about:config, it is possible to turn off, or change cache and profile location) If I was able to setup my bookmark location as a direct link to the foxmarks server, my Firefox bookmarks would always be up-to-date, and I would not have to worry about security issues of having my settings at more than one location. Since I am running Firefox from the USB flash drive, my Foxmark bookmark settings would always be secure, and I would only need to install the Foxmarks extension once. • A great extension as written down here. I use it since a half year now without problems but since a month I get an error message in german language: "Fehler beim Parsen der Sync-Datei". This means something like "error while parsing the sync-file". I got this error message on both of my computers. The error appears when I try so start the sync manually. The last good sync is from August, the 19th. Do you have any idea which could be the reason for this? I use the newest official Firefox version and updated the updates for foxmarks as well. • Is there anyway to add a bookmark when using a public computer and my.foxcloud.com? if not then that would be usefull. Otherwise i have to e-mail myself the bookmark and bookmark it at a home computer. Thanks

• Great extension. There's this one thing, though, that i would like to be added: sync exclusion for selected folders. There are these bookmarks that i only use at work or only use at home, so its an annoyance, having them shared. Otherwise great job, keep it up.

• I am a fan of firefox mozilla and been using this since i got my own laptop about 3 yrs back.I like many extensions/themes and keep searching for new addons every weekend.I stumbled up on this new Foxcloud bookmarks Sync. I installed it and synced my bookmarks online at their server.I without even thinking for a sec entered my master password when the installation prompted. I am now worried because i have stored all my passwords in firefox mozilla. Do you guys at foxcloud have an access to the user's bookmarks.I work for a product company in bayarea, we have passwords that override every other password in the system and i guess you do have like that.I much more worried because now a days its been so common, corporate laptops/desktops being stolen, getting lost, so i ask u guys at FOXCLOUD, how safe is the user's data in ur servers/machines????????????????

• Finally a bookmark sychronizing extension/program that really does what it is supposed to--and it does it perfectly! My two computers, laptop and desktop, are totally in sync now, which is so helpful because I regularly surf the net and bookmark on both computers and it used to be such a drag to export to a flash drive, etc, to get the bookmarks files on the same page (pun intended, ha!). If you work on more than one computer, well, how do I say this...this is an absolutely-fabulous-must-have-extension-you-can't-be-without! It's 5.5 on a scale of 1-5. Kudos to the developer! I bow before thee.

• I'm getting the same Unknown error 202 as another user mentions on this page. Like them, I'm synchronising with an FTP server - in my case I have no choice, all my internet connections *must* go through the proxy server, or they just time out. I managed to synchronise two computers, but I have no idea how as Foxmarks didn't seem to create any new files on the ftp server... and within a few hours it stopped working. I think the problem may have been caused by me choosing to keep the local version of the bookmark file, hoping this would upload that to the server. • Great extension that works on all of the computers I have it on (though one is fussy). Wanted to try others but they all seemed to have drawbacks. In the next revision, please address 2 things: 1) High CPU usage and freezing browser during the synch that takes 1-2 minutes, and 2) While my bookmarks file is 16K, my bandwidth meter shows significantly more data being uploaded. • This is surely an issue on my end but I don't really know how to try and fix it. I noticed on my machine at work, Foxmarks (0.72 on FireFox 1.5.0.4) shows my last sync was on June 9, 12:06 PM. If I choose "Synchronize Now", the following steps happen: Downloading Sync File, Performing Synchronization, Writing to Sync File, Connection Reset. I'm concerned about the "Connection Reset." • I tried at first to get this going and to no avail ( part my fault and part there's) but listened to there advice and now this works like a charm, I am an avid firefox user and am very happy that I now have a way to keep all my computers up to date. • Question: I downloaded Foxmarks to firefox 1.5 on both my windows and Mac tiger. I created my account in windows with the wizard (and updated it) and verified the account on-line. When running the install wizard on my mac, I type in the user and password and a drop down box holding a cancel button and a question mark appears and I cannot use the wizard. • Great idea, but not, yet, solid enough for me. Thanks for doing this extension. It's a great step forward for me to manage my numerous bookmarks across 3 different machines. Since I installed it during your server downtime, I chose my own FTP server (I also prefer this for privacy reasons). At first it worked as expected, but after a couple of days it started giving me "Unknown Error 202" messages. I could manually log into my server and rename the old foxmarks.xml and it would work another time. Then it locks up again. I am on broadband and the xml file is about 500 kb. • This software is a piece of garbage. If you create an account online, then go to install the junk, it says unauthorized. It will only let you login threw the web. Piece of American Grabage as usual.

There is some installation problem lurking in Firefox or the Add-ons site; if you search the web you'll find many people encounter it downloading many different extensions. No one seems to know what causes it. Until the mystery is solved, you can download a version from our Foxmarks: Release Notes page, e.g., Foxmarks 0.67 is the version currently available on the Mozilla Add-ons site. --Todd 11:23, 4 May 2006 (EDT)

The error that you quote above signifies FF claiming that someone is trying to use a "malformed url" -- and it sounds like that malformed url is probably associated with a Livemark. Please contact us via email if you desire further assistance. --Todd 11:00, 26 April 2006 (EDT)

• The shortcut "CTRL-SHIFT-S" conflicts with the same shortcut from the web developer toolbar, which is a pretty popular extension. Can you make the shortcut customizable?

This is our list of enhancements. As a work-around, you can re-order your extensions in the Extension Manager (right-click on an extension in the EM window to move it); the last extension in the list seems to have priority in case of keyboard shortcut conflicts. --Todd 12:03, 25 April 2006 (EDT)

• I would love to see a feature where you could specify exceptions to the sync. I have some content that would be found objectionable at work and would love to set it up so the rest of the bookmarks sync but just a couple of folders wouldn't. I would be totally happy with this extension if it would do that. (madj42) I second this. • Awesome! I set it up on my own servers (although it took a few tried until I realized that I wasn't supposed to name the xbel file in the path, as is done in BMS). Works great. Works quietly in the background without popping over my browser. Works much quicker than BMS too. I ain't going back to Bookmarks Synchronizer. Great job. Thanks!

Follow up: I'd prefer some kind of status feedback so I know when it's working. On startup I think it's not working for 15 seconds until the new bookmarks pop up, and on close I don't know when its safe to terminate my pathetic dial-up.

• Installing Foxmarks on second and third windows PC (each XP SP2 Firefox 1.5.0.1) but when I try I get the following error

This is almost certainly due to something unusual in your Firefox environment for these machines -- not something that we can affect from our end. Try this for a potential solution. --Todd 11:44, 1 March 2006 (EST)

I have had this problem with other extentions. It occurs randomly for me. My solution is to right click the link, and select, save as, and save it somewhere on the computer, and then "drag" it to Firefox, and it will ask you to install it from the local copy. After that, all updates for the extention will download like normal if you choose to update.

• Been using FoxMarks on one PC OK for about a week (latest version of all software). Just installed on a 2nd PC and did a sync, supposedly to merge the bookmarks, and it completely overwrote the bookmarks on the 2nd PC. Very disappointing - especially since I didn't back them up first (what a fool I am). I'm wondering if it's because firefox was open on the 1st PC at the same time? Can I suggest a pop-up window that shows changes before they are made and allows the user to accept or cancel the merge?? This software is a great idea but it needs to work! --Dan

Dan, sorry to hear this. You can check the FAQ for information about how to restore your bookmarks from backup. And it would be really helpful if you could send us your log file so we can diagnose the problem. --Todd 19:44, 17 February 2006 (EST)

• It's working wonderfully for me so far. I love the simplicity of the account setup and complete integration with Firefox's native bookmarks that does not add features that I don't need. • Hi there. I'd like to say this is a great add to Firefox. Works without a glitch so far. Thanks very much. By the way may I ask why this extension is not listed at addons.mozilla.org? I've been searching for an add on like this for long. Bookmarks Synchronizer wouldn't work for me as I don't have FTP access, and I coulnd't make it work with a free web hosting. I've tried both methods locally and in testing there seems to be neglibible speed increase for synch updates of a 1Mb bookmark file. Just curious what advantages DAV has over FTP and whether I should stick to using DAV given your efforts are focussed on it (according to the last changelog iirc). Thanks for a great extension btw!

DAV provides support for etags, which Foxmarks uses eliminate downloads of an unchanged sync file. FTP doesn't support etags. --Todd 04:48, 7 February 2006 (EST)

• --Munk 13:50, 5 February 2006 (EST) Had some minor confusion connecting via FTP - I was using the absolute path to the synch file instead of relative path. The configuration dialog could make this clearer I think - it's not obvious that a relative path should be used, especially since the 'default' setting says '/home/<user>/' which makes the user think an absolute path is required. Could be resolved by changing the label for the 'path' form field in the Advanced Server Settings from just 'Path' to 'Relative path'.

• Learnt about this extension from digg - really looks very good so far. Tried on WinXP and MacOSX. Only had minor problems with script-timeout (Firefox asked if I wanted to stop the script) and different namings (it seems) between German Firefox 1.5 on Win and same version on Mac (different naming of the "Toolbar Folder", same language version). I use Simpy a lot, but for the Toolbar-folder, I still have good old static bookmarks;-) Thanks for a great extension! — Gregor, 03 Feb 2006

• It kinda messed up my bookmarks. I was hoping it would match folder for folder, but instead it looks like it just appends everything onto the existing bookmarks making a mess, and leaves a ton of seperators around.

• It'd be very nice to have a preference whether you'd always like to keep the ordering and conflicts as in the local or as in the remote version. In that way synching would really be automatic, instead of popping up a dialog every time.

It would be great if each server type had it's own user/pass/address/path so that a backup can be done easily. Possibly allowing for export of the configurations would also be great. Otherwise, I've been happy to dump bookmarks synchronizer and not look back. With Mr Tech's Local Install conflicting with it, I'd taken to adding toolbar buttons and trying to remember to manually force detection if I touched my bookmarks. I've lost far too many changes with BMS to even try to count.

Creating a new account using the Setup Wizard creates an account on the Foxcloud server, irrelevant if you're planning to use your own FTP server. Foxmarks constructs a URL just as you've described above from the protocol, username, password, server name, and path fields that you can find in the Foxmarks Settings Dialog. Some configuration of these inputs fields should get you what you wanted, but as we've observed elsewhere, we can't provide much support for people using their own server as the complexity is too high. --Todd 12:43, 5 January 2006 (EST)

The literal answer to your question is that we didn't use XBEL because it was easier for our purposes to use Firefox's native RDF/XML format. That being said, if there's substantial end-user desire to have bookmarks available in other formats like XBEL, we'd certainly consider it. • ChristopherA 13:33, 15 December 2005 (EST) I installed Foxmarks 0.36 into Firefox 1.5 on Windows XP SP2. After installation restarted Firefox and the Foxmarks setup dialogue started. I selected create a new account, and entered my email address as Christophera@AlacrityManagement.com but it repeatedly reported that I must enter a valid email address. I then tried christophera@alacritymanagement.com with the same error.I then cancelled, but now there is no signup box in the Foxcloud extensions options box, so I am unable to try further.

There is a 32-character limit in email addresses that Foxmarks has inherited from its server. Your email address weighs in at 36 characters, thus the refusal. I'll file a bug report to try to get that limit increased (128 characters seems reasonably safe to me). As a temporary work-around, perhaps you could use an alternative email address from one of the free email providers.

Hi guys. Thanks for a very interesting extension. Like the site logo. Very cool. On Firefox 1.5 I had a flawless install of Foxmarks. I just downloaded it to my usb memory stick and dropped it onto a running Firefox window and it installed ok. Restarted Firefox and the Wizard ran fine and when I use another machine I will see if this extension does what it says on the tin. There is a facility at Netvibes (http://www.netvibes.com/) to save firefox bookmarks online and it works - bit it requires JavaScript to be turned on to work. This is ok on my own machine but I cannot do so on the office pc as the system administrator has locked down the computer. I have an extension on Firefox called No Script which allows me to block JavaScript on a per session basis and so enable it on Netvibes to access my bookmarks. (user: JavaScript) 20.10.05.

• User Greg: installed on two Mac OS X machines. Changes synched to the server immediately. Excellent. But when I switch machines, even a quit & restart of Firefox doesn't sync -from- the server, as one would expect. Had to sync explicitly from the Foxmarks... menu. It seems that once one bothers to combine, install, and register two machines, it should fetch automatically, at some point, by default. (Maybe on restart; maybe when the browser is next used; maybe when it's idle for a minute ... ) Until then, it's probably good to tell users that this doesn't happen on-the-fly. Still -- wonderful job!

• Brian: I am using Firefox 1.5 on the Mac, and each time I try to install I get the error message: "Foxmarks Bookmark Synchronizer 0.39 could not be installed because it is not compatible with Firefox 1.5. I downloaded Firefox again, and reinstalled just to make sure I had the very latest, but I still get the error.

I am using Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Foxmarks .55 on Windows XP SP2, but the same problem happens when I use 1.5.0.1 and a previous version of Foxmarks on OSX 1.4. One suggestion -- could you clear my previously uploaded bookmarks, and make my account ChristopherA start from scratch? Maybe there is some bad data on the upload from a much earlier beta version that is causing this lockup.

I got the software installation prohibited message, then I chose Edit Options and added www.foxcloud.com to the list of sites allowed to install extensions. Then reloaded, still got same error bar. • It would be great if I can define some exceptions on specific bookmarks (folders). Because although most of my bookmarks at home and at work are common, some of them are relevant for work only. It is most annoying when I have my most favorite bookmarks on my 'Bookmarks Toolbar Folder' at work, and they take a lot of place at home and I don't even need them.

• BUG REPORT: Installed on two OS X 1.5.0.2 installs without any trouble. Merged beautifully. Then installed on Fedora Core 5 (also 1.5.0.2) and merge does not produce the same Bookmark Toolbar. Apparently FC5 calls the toolbar "Personal Toolbar Folder" while OS X calls it "Bookmarks Toolbar Folder" so all the bookmarks show up, they just don't show up MERGED on the toolbar like I wanted for all machines. Admittedly, if Mozilla is using different naming conventions across operating systems, then it's their fault and not Foxmarks' fault, but nonetheless the behavior produced is not what a Foxmarks user would want. Did you know that you can designate any folder you want to be the bookmark toolbar folder? In the Bookmark Manager view (Bookmarks -> Manage Bookmarks...) select a folder and then Edit -> Set As Toolbar Folder. Foxmarks should (but doesn't) pay special attention to the Bookmark Toolbar Folder when performing the merge, but in the meantime, you should be able to use Set As Toolbar Folder to get past your problem. --Todd 20:08, 29 April 2006 (EDT)

• I am very, very confused. Initially I assumed that I'd need one synchronisation account for multiple PCs. The setup was successful on the first PC (Windows XP), although very slow, but on the second PC (Windows 98SE), after I said I had an existing account, the setup wizard spent an hour and a half searching for a non-existent sync file - so I ended up having to terminate the wizard. I then thought that perhaps I'm meant to create a new account on every machine I want to synchronize, and that the accounts would be then synchronized by the server(?). So I created a new account on the second PC, and now I can't see how I'm supposed to synchronize the two accounts. Please explain exactly how to use this extension. Your initial assumption is correct -- you need only one synchronization account. The fact that setup was very slow for the first account and then took > 90 minutes for the second account suggests that you have network problems. I second Steph's concerns. I too get endless 'searching for sync file' from almost any computer I use, almost anywhere. I originally accepted Todd's view, but I've become more sceptical. • Very nice extension. In fact, it's the most useful one I have yet, Great job! The other night I lost all of my bookmarks, though I was able to restore them from the backup. I beleive that was my machines fault though. One thing that I was wondering is if it works on the linux version of Firefox. • Always have problems when I add bookmarks to the "tool bar folder". Always. When I go to my next machine it will maybe have 2 of the same bookmark on there, and then when you press one of them the duplicate gets deleted and the existent one goes blank (in terms of name and web address). The extension generally works great. I did have a problem once -- it seemed to delete all my bookmarks rather than update them. I see your note about restoring from backup on your machine. However, this may be a useful option in the extension. Restore backup could either restore from your machine, or it could restore a previous version of the bookmarks from the server.

I looked through the xml-file on the sync-server and it seems like you're not storing the icon from the bookmarks-file. • I love the product guys, I have been looking for something like this for yrs. The one issue I have found is with deleting bookmarks. I use foxmarks to keep my desktop and laptop in sync. So now what happens when I delete a book mark from one and then I go to the second machine and sync it puts the book mark back. So i was thinking there needs to be like a master machine setting. Meaning if i want my desktop to be the master machine, when book marks are deleted using that machine they are deleted on the second machine, or 3rd, 4th however many. So that when the other machines are re-synced they do not put back the book marks you have just deleted. Make sense?? i hope so..if not let me know and i will try to make it clearer. Other than that great job!!! Keep up the good work!!

Sigh, seems I lost my bookmark collection now, thanks to Foxmark. It uploaded the few default bookmarks from my other computer (where I had just installed firefox and foxmarks), instead of downloading all of my bookmarks from the server to the other computer. :(

If I remember correctly I specified on the other computer to 'download bookmarks from server and discard local ones', but there might have been some browser crash or such, and apparently the automatic syncronization went ahead and silently replaced all of my bookmarks on the server when firefox was restarted. :(

I'd very much appreciate versioning support for foxmark (storing the bookmark files in subversion should not increase their size very much) - or even just one bi-weekly or so rotating backup for each user, that could allow recovering from these kind of unfortunate losses.

As it is now, I'll have to look into some kind of local regular subversion backup of the bookmarks on my main machine - it's just going to be a pain to set up and configure. And that is, assuming that I find any backup of my bookmarks (I had one, but it was on a laptop that had a harddrive crash recently). I'll now retire to work through my sorrow and loss.. :~(

UPDATE: Fortunately, Firefox itself already includes something like this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Lost_bookmarks So I was able to recover my bookmarks :)

Still, a versioning supporting backend could be an interesting feature to ponder anyway for Foxmarks.

Was able to install and upload on one machine with Firefox 2. when I try to download on another with same, it starts to sync and hangs for up to 2-3 hours.. I like it. It's simple and just works. But it's too simple so I have two suggestions:

Syncing "file:///" urls isn't doing me any good and they aren't necessarily cross platform. My Mac doesn't have a C: folder, so even if I wanted to, I couldn't create parallel local documents. Stop doing that or make it optional.

I would like to have bookmarks organized into named groups. For example, I could set up 3 groups for me: Global, WorkInternal, and Personal. I could then set up machine with what groups to pull down/keep synced. I don't want my personal bookmarks at work, likewise I don't want machine local or internal work links at home. But I do want to share my external links that I use at work and at home.

This happened 20 Minutes ago.

I restarted my computer. After logging in, i double cliked on Firefox (2.0).

I like foxmarks, but I have a lot of bookmarks and I hesitate whenever I want to add or change them. I wish that there was some way to clone the bookmark list and start a thread for the synchronization and allow firefox to continue browsing while foxmarks does its work. I know that's tricky, but I'm gettin' gray hair here. (smile)
